How to cut stress (not meditating)

We all know too much stress is bad for us, right?

So we do all the things to help prevent it – we get enough sleep, don’t overschedule ourselves, exercise, eat right, do breathing exercises, etc. etc. etc.

And even so, sometimes we find ourselves smack in the middle of a stress overload! Especially this time of year, with all the extra activities and worries about meeting expectations.

I’ve got a quick fix for you that doesn’t involve meditating.

Here it is … GO FOR A WALK (OR RUN) OUTSIDE. Even 5 to 10 minutes can make a real difference.

It has been a stress cure for centuries! (Because it works.)

“I took a walk in nature and came out taller than the trees,” – Henry David Thoreau.

You don’t have to walk in the trees to get the benefits. You can do it pretty much anywhere.

And if you can’t go for an actual walk … just go outside and sit for a few minutes.

Here are a few reasons why this can help cut stress:

  1. It removes you from the stressful environment. (SO important!) This helps you naturally shift your energy and perspective.

  1. It helps you reconnect with the outside world. Take some time to look around at your surroundings. This can help break the loop of stressful and worried thoughts.

  1. It helps you reconnect with your body. Usually, when we’re stressed, it’s because we’re “in our heads” – wrapped up in our thoughts. The act of walking will help your muscles loosen up, getting rid of physical tension.

Plus … exercise is good for your heart and overall health!

I hope you can avoid the extra “holiday stress” over the coming weeks – but if you can’t, try lacing up those walking shoes and getting outside!

Make it an amazing day,

Christina

Fortunately the winter hasn’t been too brutal here so there have been nicer days to get out for walks which I really do enjoy…there is nothing like fresh air and sunshine.

I can’t agree more! I am walking daily and it is helping a lot! I am also doing Yoga and that too is great.

I love this and seriously walking is the perfect way to destress! Once I get in a bit of better shape I would love to start running again as I was an avid runner when I was younger. Exercise also is good for your mood and energy levels… thank you for sharing!

I agree about walking, I find being outdoors and around nature calms me when I feel too stressed and chocolate helps as well

Yes I do this all the time! Walking or running is so good mentally, and not just physically! Great advice here.
