5 Powerful Reads That Will Change Your Life

Welcome to another post in our September MINDFULNESS series! Have you enjoyed it so far? Hopefully, you’ve found tools and tricks for your journey so you can get back to living a fulfilled and happy life.

Throughout the years, I’ve read books that literally changed my life. I walked away a different person and shaped my outlook on living an abundant life. Books are a priceless resource; a culmination of 5, 10, 15+ years of someone’s life and wisdom summed up in 200+ pages. The insight I’ve gleaned helped shape me in every way imaginable. If you can’t tell, I’m a total #BookNerd.

In today’s post, I’m sharing 5 books that resonated with me on my journey AND I’ve got a giveaway – make sure to scroll further down for all of the details!

The Universe Has Your Back by Gabby Bernstein

Gabby was my first introduction to the world of a “spirit junkie”, often described as a “radical road to self-love and miracles”. When I read her book, I felt my soul light up; everything about it really spoke to an inner craving for a deeper life and the tools to navigate perceived suffering. I walk away with the desire to seek out life’s mini miracles. It was this mindset, all about miracles, that shifted small moments into something to be celebrated. If you’re craving food for the soul this is a must read.

Better Than Before by Gretchen Rubin

Gretchen is my kind of gal; like Gabby above, she believes in small things making a big difference, and that over time they amount to a shift in overall perception of the world around us. What I particularly enjoyed about this book were the practical life skills I still apply to this day and the focus on habit building that soon becomes second nature. Things like:

Pairing habits (I don’t LOVE doing dishes, but I LOVE podcasts, so I “pair” those habits and dishes become less dreadful).

Top questions the book answers:

  • Why do I find it tough to create a habit for something I love to do?
  • Sometimes I can change a habit overnight, and sometimes I can’t change a habit, no matter how hard I try. Why?
  • How quickly can I change a habit?
  • What can I do to make sure I stick to a new habit?
  • How can I help someone else change a habit?
  • Why can I keep habits that benefit others, but can’t make habits that are just for me?

The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle

If you’re breathing, you’ve likely heard of this wise, wise man. His bestselling book forced me out of my comfort zone and straight into the arms of the present moment. It was uncomfortable at first, to own up to the fact that I’d been living on autopilot for so long, but eventually, I realized what a gift it is to enjoy each moment in all its glory without anticipating what’s to come or what has already occurred.

If you struggle with anxiety and/or depression (they tend to hang out on the same continuum), this book is especially helpful for learning how to identify your pain-body (I talked about this in the first post for our Mindfulness month – go here to check it out) and diminish its power so you can stop worrying about what’s to come and obsessing about the past, and LIVE. Live in the present moment and savor it fully.

Mini Habits by Stephen Guise

This self-published gem is all about hacking the brain. Don’t like exercising? Even so, think you could do just ONE push-up per day? The answer, in case you’re wondering, is YES! And over time, your mind will go “Well, I can do more than that!”. Before you know it, willpower is a thing of the past and HABITS take over. This means you still get your workout done when it’s raining or you just don’t wanna. You still write at least 50 words per day even when there a million things on your to-do list.

Creating habits so simple they are laughable is key, says Stephen. That way, you’re never a failure. You ALWAYS have time for your minimums and eventually, you’ll notice you start to exceed those on most days until you form a new normal.

BONUS: this is a super quick, concise read!

Journey To The Heart by Melody Beattie

Melody’s words paint a picture that projects me right into the moment she’s conjuring. Her insight and wisdom are a welcome respite from the day-to-day noise. She delights in mini-miracles, in better paths discovered because of unexpected detours, and most of all in introspection and the power of observance. Journey To The Heart is a warm, comforting cup of tea on a dreary winter day.
