How To Beat Dry Winter Skin

How To Beat Dry Winter Skin

by Christina Sanghera

I don’t know about you, but it’s like a switch is flipped when October graces us with her presence. All the sudden, my normal oil prone face is so tight and taught I can barely move it. My skin gets flaky and I’m applying an endless amount of moisturizer.

Helllooo dry skin. Here in Sactown, we have a very distinct winter season full of freezing temps (shhhh I know it’s not *actually* freezing … we Cali people are total babies about temperature) and dry air. Anyway, what you put on your skin is important, ya’ll! Oh, and there are countless harmful chemicals in today’s products which is why these remedies are all about that hippie lifestyle (and I’m cool with that).

No matter where you live, if you’re looking to beat dry skin, I’ve got you covered so read on!

  • Hot showers be damned!! I know, I know. I dig a super hot shower too. BUT the thing is, your already dry skin reallllyy doesn’t like it. It’s best to go with lukewarm instead and skip the scalding heat.
  • Put a little water on your face before moisturizing. I’ve been doing this for years, and it helps lock in the moisture!

  • You got that, you got that you got that milk money (shoutout to Fergie). If you’re itching like crazy, grab a washcloth and put some milk on yo’ face! It should stop the itch dead in its tracks.
  • Dead skin cells! Those suckers are blocking your ability to absorb moisture in the first place. Enter: exfoliation. There are a ton of easy homemade recipes (always test a bit out first to make sure your skin agrees). A super simple recipe: coconut oil + sugar (make sure the oil is melted). Stir it up, then apply to your face in a GENTLE circular motion for 60 seconds. Wipe off with a damp washcloth. Voila!
  • Introducing your new night cream: COCONUT OIL! Instead of a standard night cream, slather this wonderful + natural moisturizer on your face. Like I mentioned above, you’ll want to wet your face just a tad to help it absorb. Coconut oil boasts an array of benefits, including antibacterial properties!

  • Don’t forget about nutrition. Much of dry skin is born from a lack of essential fatty acids. There are two that you never want to skimp on: DHA and EPA which can be found in your friendly neighborhood fish oil supplement! ALA is another big player and can be found in things like nuts and seeds! It goes without saying, but you can never go wrong with a nutrient dense diet. Deficiencies often manifest on the outside, so love on your body, will ya!?

What tip above are you going to try? Have any other tips I didn’t mention? Let me know in the comments!

    I love the coconut oil and sugar idea. Cheap and cuts down on product packaging from commercial exfoliatiants

    I’m excited to try coconut oil on my face, I have never thought to use that but I am going to put it to the test! & what a bummer to hear about the hot showers , they tend to be my favorite during winter time … but lukewarm showers it is (;
